I am pleased to attach the latest monthly Libyan Business Review. The Libyan Business Review provides a concise monthly review of major developments so that you are able to identify potential opportunities.

 

This month lays the focus on different deals between Libya and Russia. Russia wrote off  $ 4.5 bill of Libya’s cold war debt. Furthermore the world’s largest producer of natural gas Gazprom and the Eni of Italy are preparing to pipe gas from Libya to Southern Europe.

Russia Railways says it seals Libya contract

(April 16, 2008)

State-controlled Russian Railways has finalised a 2 billion euro ($3.16 billion) contract with Libya to build a stretch of line from the cities of Sirte to Benghazi, the company’s head said on Wednesday.

Railways head Alexander Yakunin, speaking to reporters on a visit to Libya with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said the contract would be signed on Thursday.

"The document is ready for signing," he added.

The venture would take four years to complete and involve Libyan subcontractors, he said without elaborating. The coastal cities are more than 500 km (310 miles) apart. (Reporting by Oleg Shchedrov; Writing by William Maclean; Editing by Brian Moss)

 

Libya and Dubai to Set Up $3b Investment fund

(April 15, 2008)

 

Libya and Dubai have reached an agreement to set up a $3 billion joint investment fund to finance projects in Libya and the UAE, Libyan officials said yesterday.

 

The officials named a $500 million joint real estate and tourism firm, a $400 million bank and water desalination plants among the projects.

Libya to redefine all contracts with oil companies

(April 10, 2008)

 

The Libyan government says it will review all future contracts with oil companies in a bid to reap more benefit for the country, a senior Libyan government official  "Libya is going back to renegotiate all its oil contracts," Libya’s national representative at the African Petroleum Producers’ Association, Seddigui N. Ismail said in an interview at the APPA meeting in Yaounde last week.

Gazprom and Eni prepare to join forces to pipe natural gas from Libya to Europe

(April 9, 2008)

 

Gazprom of Russia, the world’s largest producer of natural gas, and Eni of Italy are preparing to join forces to pipe natural gas from Libya across the Mediterranean to Southern Europe. The ambitious deal would enable Russia to diversify its energy sources but also further increase Europe’s dependence on Gazprom, which is state-controlled.
